Make a Difference... Become a Shelter Volunteer

The Washington County Humane Society is dedicated to the humane treatment of all animals. Our goal is to find loving homes for our shelter animals. While animals are housed at our facility, we treat them like pets, not statistics. By donating time and energy, volunteers assist us with the animals' care and surroundings. At the shelter, volunteers and animals share compassion and love.
Listed below are many ways in which you can make a difference:

Kennel Assistants -- Monday through Sunday. This would involve caring for animals--cleaning cages and litter boxes, feeding, walking dogs, and general shelter cleanup.

Groomers -- Do you have some extra time to groom animals that arrive at the shelter snarled and matted?? How about transforming a scruffy dog or cat into the beautiful animals they rightfully should be?? We need your help! Please call.

Office Work / Answering Phones -- 8AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday. Answer phones, call people waiting for pets on our "wanted" list or follow up with owners of lost pets. This could also involve filings and mailings.

Volunteer Adoption Counselors -- Greet people as they arrive at the shelter. Take them around to see animals available for adoption. Work with people to match animals to suitable homes.

Special Events -- We need volunteers to help at our fundraising events. If you work, or have limited time, but would like to help a couple times a year, sign up for these fundraising events. This can involve anything from baking or making decorations ahead of time to actually working the day of the event.

Pet-A-Pet -- For a wonderful way to brighten up your day and that of someone who needs your love and the love of a pet consider sharing your favorite pet with people confined to hospitals and nursing homes. This is a rewarding experience for you, your pet, and the people you come in contact with. We currently visit 10 facilities.

Foster Care -- Share your love, compassion, and home with a special needs animal until a suitable home can be found.
